What is PNG?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster graphics file format that supports lossless data compression. It is widely used on the web for images that require transparency or high-quality line art. Unlike SVGs, PNGs are made up of a fixed grid of pixels, which means they can lose quality and become pixelated when resized or zoomed in. While PNGs offer excellent quality and transparency, they often have larger file sizes compared to other raster formats like JPEG, especially for complex photographs.
What is SVG?
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format. Instead of pixels, SVGs use mathematical equations to define lines, shapes, and colors. This allows them to be scaled infinitely without any loss of quality. They are ideal for logos, icons, and illustrations that need to look sharp on any screen size or resolution. However, SVGs can become complex and large in file size if used for highly detailed images like photographs, where raster formats are more efficient.
The Vectorization Process
Vectorization (or image tracing) is the process of converting a raster image (like a PNG or JPG) into a vector graphic (SVG). Our tool analyzes the pixels in your image, detects edges and color changes, and then mathematically redraws these shapes as vector paths. This transforms a static grid of pixels into editable, scalable geometry. This process works best with high-contrast images, logos, and simple illustrations.
Conversion Modes
Choose the best preset for your image type:
- Logo (Recommended): Optimized for logos and icons with few colors. Provides the most accurate path tracing and cleanest results.
- Detailed: Best for complex images. Preserves more small details and color variations.
- Sharp Edges: Enhances corners and straight lines. Ideal for geometric shapes and technical diagrams.
- Smooth Curves: Creates flowing, organic curves. Perfect for hand-drawn sketches or artistic illustrations.
